Zelenskyy on transfer of NPPs to US: we will not discuss issue of ownership

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed regarding the transfer of Ukrainian nuclear power plants to the US that NPPS belong to the people of Ukraine and the Ukrainian authorities do not intend to discuss the issue of ownership of them.

Zelenskyy said this during a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre following the talks in Oslo, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

In particular, he said that in a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on March 19, they discussed the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (Enerhodar, Zaporizhzhia Region) occupied by the russians, but not the issue of ownership of it.

"The question that the Americans are asking us, I don't know if they discussed it with the russians or not... President Trump asked me: what do you think about this station? I told him that, if it is not Ukrainian, it will not work for anyone. This is illegal. We cannot simply dispose of this station, because it is state-owned. The question is that if, and we have heard these voices, if the Americans are thinking about this, how to find a way out of this situation, they want to take it away from the russians and want to invest, modernize it - this is a different question, this is an open question. We can talk about it, but we definitely did not discuss the issue of ownership with President Trump," he said.

Zelenskyy also noted that he and Trump did not discuss the messages that appeared in the press regarding the generation in Ukraine in general.

"We will not discuss. We have 15 operating nuclear power units today, all of which belong to our state. We are connected to the European network. For us, these are serious guarantees of energy security," he stressed.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on March 19, Trump told Zelenskyy in a telephone conversation the details of his conversation on March 18 with the leader of the aggressor country, vladimir putin, and noted that the cessation of strikes on energy and other civilian infrastructure facilities could be the first step towards a complete end to the war and the establishment of security. Zelenskyy supported this step, and Ukraine confirmed its readiness to implement it.

The White House statement on the talks between Trump and Zelenskyy notes that Trump also discussed Ukrainian electricity supply and nuclear power plants. He said that the United States could be very useful in managing these plants due to its experience in the power industry and utilities. American ownership of these stations would be the best protection and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
