Hungary's latest blackmail to remove a number of individuals from the sanctions list in order to extend restrictions on russia has caused open indignation within the European Union. Officials of the bloc's member states have begun to openly discuss depriving Budapest of its voting rights.
RBC-Ukraine writes about this with reference to the Financial Times (FT) material.
According to FT, Hungary's latest actions have sparked open discussions among European officials about applying the procedure of Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union to Budapest. This involves depriving the country of its voting rights.
The publication writes that if Hungary again pulls the blackmail trick in July of this year, when EU countries will again have to vote on extending sanctions against russia, calls for action against Budapest may reach their peak.
It is noted that the EU countries are aware of the potential problems that could arise if Hungary is deprived of its voting rights.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in early March, Politico informed that the European Parliament had developed a nine-point plan that includes restrictions on countries that block joint EU decisions.
Recall that in January 2025, Hungary threatened to block Ukraine's entry into the European Union due to Kyiv's decision to stop the transit of russian gas.
