Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó hinted that Hungary may block Ukraine's entry into the European Union due to suspension of gas transit from russia.
This is stated in the minister's post on Facebook, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
Szijjártó wrote that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reacted quite aggressively to his statement about increasing gas prices due to the suspension of transit. He also emphasized that a draft law on the ban on the transit of russian gas and oil through Ukraine during martial law has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada.
"In this regard, we must respectfully draw the attention of our Ukrainian colleagues to the fact that there is reality, there are rights and obligations. The reality is that in the EU, member states collectively and unanimously make decisions on the admission of new members. In other words, each member state must vote "yes", wrote the minister.
At the same time, he noted that each country has the right to decide where and how it will receive energy resources, and no one from the outside has the right to influence this and impose more expensive and less safe energy sources on another country.
"A country that concludes an association agreement with the EU or even wants to become a member of the EU is obliged to contribute to the EU's energy security by providing transport routes. Therefore, the closure of natural gas and oil transportation routes is unacceptable and contradicts the expectations associated with EU integration," he said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on December 16, Ukraine called on the Hungarian side to stop "immoral manipulations" on the topic of peace and Christmas.
