The European Union is not preparing to ease or lift sanctions against the aggressor country russia for its full-scale war. On the contrary, the bloc is working on a new package of restrictions.
The press secretary of the European Commission Anitta Hipper stated this on Thursday, March 13, her words are quoted by WNP.
Hipper was asked about Hungary's demand to exclude some individuals in order to approve the extension of anti-russian sanctions.
A number of media outlets wrote the day before that Hungary is demanding the lifting of sanctions against russian oligarch Mikhail Fridman.
"We are making every effort to ensure that an agreement on the extension of sanctions is reached on time," Hipper replied.
She also commented on possible russian demands. Some media outlets reported that moscow intends to demand the lifting of at least half of the sanctions in order to conclude a peace agreement.
According to Hipper, the sanctions continue to work and their goal remains to weaken russia and strengthen Ukraine.
She added that the European Union is currently working on the 17th package of sanctions.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on February 24, 2025, the European Union announced the introduction of the 16th package of sanctions against russia for its full-scale military aggression against Ukraine.
On the same day, the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said that the bloc is working on a new package of restrictions against russia.
Recall that in 2024, the European Union spent more on purchasing gas and oil from russia than it allocated for assistance to Ukraine.
