Ukraine may purchase significant volumes of American gas this year through terminals in Germany, Greece, Lithuania and Poland.
This is reported by Economic Pravda with reference to Reuters.
The report says that this is necessary to cover the needs after russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
The head of the GTS Operator of Ukraine Dmytro Lyppa said that the country plans to import at least 4 billion cubic meters of gas between April and October.
According to Reuters, the cost of imports will be at least USD 1 billion.
Ukraine has large underground storage facilities that can be used to store American liquefied gas, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Kyiv and the White House have discussed this possibility.
Of the total volume of imports through Europe, up to half will not be pipeline gas, but liquefied natural gas, which will be supplied to European terminals, and of this, according to Lyppa, the largest possible part can come from the United States of America.
For a stable heating season, the country must accumulate at least 13 billion cubic meters of gas by mid-October.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Ukraine imported 511.8 million cubic meters of natural gas in February 2025, which is the highest monthly volume in 1.5 years, since September 2023.
Ukraine plans to import up to 800 million cubic meters of natural gas from Europe in February and March to compensate for a 40% drop in production after missile strikes by the aggressor country of russia.
