Ukraine wants to consolidate EU membership in peace agreement – Shmyhal

Ukraine wants to consolidate future membership in the European Union in a peace agreement to end the war.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said this during a press conference on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the government, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"Our ambition is to have EU membership as one of the elements of our peace agreement. This is our ambition and we ask for this support from Poland as well," he said.

Shmyhal added that Ukraine has high hopes for the Polish presidency of the EU, which began on January 1, 2025 and will last until June 1.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after leaving the White House early on February 28 after a dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasized that Ukraine needs a just and lasting peace.

Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social that the President of Ukraine is not ready for peace and that he has shown disrespect to the United States, but he can return when he is ready for peace.

On February 24, Zelenskyy said at the Support Ukraine summit with the participation of leaders of partner countries and the European Union leadership in Kyiv that 2025 should be the year of the beginning of real, reliable peace.

On June 21, 2024, the EU Council approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession.
