Sweden to consider joining possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine

Sweden will consider participating in a possible peacekeeping mission that Western countries are currently discussing sending to Ukraine. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said this in a comment to Reuters.

Kristersson confirmed that Sweden would participate in discussions about a possible mission.

He also called the appearance of Swedish Armed Forces soldiers in the ranks of the peacekeeping contingent "absolutely possible".

Kristersson stressed that a clear mandate for these forces is needed to send peacekeepers to Ukraine.

"I don't think we can see that until we have come further in those negotiations. But Sweden, we are normally a part of strengthening security in our part of the world, so I foresee us to be a part of that this time as well," the head of the Swedish government said.

Reuters recalled that earlier today, February 17, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said that it was first necessary to organize a stable and just peace.

She added that the Swedish government would not rule out anything (in terms of sending its troops — ed.) when such a peace is established and there is an understanding that it can be maintained.

Kristersson and Stenergard's words came against the backdrop of a statement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who declared his readiness to send British troops to Ukraine in order to secure a possible peace agreement.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on February 14, The Associated Press reported, citing sources, that a group of European countries are working on a plan for a peacekeeping mission that could be sent to Ukraine after the cessation of hostilities.

Recall, at the end of January, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that the peacekeeping contingent that could be sent to Ukraine should consist not only of European soldiers.

And according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, without the U.S., a purely European peacekeeping mission will not be able to defend Ukraine.
