President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that a peacekeeping mission consisting of military contingents only from European countries will not cope with the defense of Ukraine. It will have the desired effect if American troops are present in it.
Zelenskyy said this in an interview with Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Micklethwait on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine's European partners do not have enough soldiers to become a real deterrent for russia. Therefore, the US army should also be included in the peacekeeping mission.
"This cannot happen without the United States. Even if some European friends think that this is possible, no, this cannot happen. No one will take risks without the United States," Zelenskyy said.
He added that when a peace agreement is concluded, Ukraine will need a powerful military force. It will allow guaranteeing the implementation of this agreement.
Recall, earlier today, January 22, Zelenskyy said that he supports the deployment of a peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine as part of security guarantees. He believes that the number of peacekeeping contingents should be at least 200,000 people.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on January 15, The Telegraph reported, citing sources, that the governments of France and Great Britain are discussing the sending of peacekeepers to Ukraine.
The day before, Lithuanian Defense Minister Kęstutis Budrys announced his readiness to join the peacekeeping mission. Vilnius will send its troops if asked.
In December 2024, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed that several countries support the sending of troops to Ukraine, but this issue is only at the stage of general discussions.
