The unrecognized Transnistria has rejected EUR 60 million in aid from the European Union, although it is still in an energy crisis.
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean has announced this.
"In the medium term, the EU's offer of EUR 60 million was a solution that was supposed to save "Transnistria" from energy blackmail and instability. However, Tiraspol rejected this solution. Russia does not allow them to accept European aid because it is afraid of losing control over the region," Recean noted.
Moldova has a joint plan with the EU, according to which the country will receive EUR 250 million from the EU in 2025. Transnistria is also promised money, but under certain conditions.
The promised EUR 60 million would be enough to cover 70% of social energy consumption. Transnistria was supposed to pay money for transporting gas from the Moldovan border. Tiraspol was also supposed to release political prisoners, keep Moldovan public television in the broadcasting network, and remove checkpoints that appeared in 2022.
"The decision chosen by the Tiraspol regime means that the residents of "Transnistria" will continue to live in a state of unpredictability and worry about gas supplies. This is a decision that does not solve the problem in the long term," they say in Moldova.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, almost 75,000 houses/apartments in the Transnistria region have been disconnected from the gas network, and 115,000 are already receiving a limited amount of gas. Coal reserves to cover their own needs for electricity and heat will last for 50 days.
The separatist Moldovan region of Transnistria has cut off heating and hot water supplies to households after gas transit through Ukraine was halted.
Russia has demanded that Moldova use an alternative route through the Balkans for gas supplies, but Moldova has refused. Therefore, on December 28, 2024, Gazprom officially announced that it would stop supplying gas to Transnistria from January 1, 2025 due to "non-fulfillment of payment obligations."
