Transnistria turns off heating and hot water supply for consumers due to cessation of gas transit through Ukraine

The separatist Moldovan region of Transnistria has stopped heating and hot water supply to households after the cessation of gas transit through Ukraine.

The Ukrainian News agency’s Telegram channel has reported this.

"It is forbidden to use gas and electric stoves to heat an apartment. This can lead to a tragedy," the energy company said.

Local companies also urged residents to dress warmer, gather family members in one room, hang blankets or thick curtains on windows and balcony doors, and use electric heaters.

As is known, Transnistria is a pro-russian entity that separated from the rest of Moldova after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. It received russian gas through Ukraine. Transnistria has generally coexisted peacefully with Moldova since the brief post-Soviet war of 1992. About 1,500 Russian troops are stationed there.

The local parliament last month appealed to the kremlin and the russian parliament to reach a new agreement with Ukraine to ensure continued gas supplies. Moscow said at the time that it would protect its citizens and military in Transnistria. Moldova accuses russia of using its energy dependence on moscow to destabilize the country.

As previously reported, the Agreement on Interaction between LLC GTS Operator of Ukraine and PJSC Gazprom for Physical Connection Points of the russian federation-Ukraine between the gas transportation systems of Ukraine and the russian federation, dated December 30, 2019, expired on January 1, 2025 at 7 a.m. Kyiv time.
