U.S. President Donald Trump said that the United States is moving forward in negotiations to end the war between russia and Ukraine. At the same time, he refused to disclose the details of any contacts he had with russian president vladimir putin.
This is reported by Reuters.
Western media outlets have noted that Trump's statement while talking to reporters aboard Air Force One may indicate the first officially confirmed conversation between the U.S. President and the head of the kremlin since the beginning of 2022.
When asked whether he had spoken to putin after his inauguration on January 20 or earlier, Trump answered in the affirmative.
"I’ve had it. Let’s just say I’ve had it...And I expect to have many more conversations. We have to get that war (between russia and Ukraine – ed.) ended," the American President said.
He also emphasized that he was not going to disclose the content of the negotiations.
"If we are talking, I don’t want to tell you about the conversations," he added.
Trump noted that the American side maintains contacts with both russia and Ukraine.
"We're talking to both sides," the U.S. President said.
He also emphasized that Washington is trying to stop the war.
"I do believe we’re making progress. We want to stop the Ukraine-Russia war," Trump said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the day before, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that putin was preparing not for negotiations, but for the continuation of the war, and not only against Ukraine – in particular, the russians are increasing their army by more than 100,000 soldiers.
On February 3, Trump said that he wants to conclude an agreement with Ukraine on the supply of Ukrainian rare earth minerals to the United States.
On February 4, a source in the President's Office told the media that a clause on minerals had been added to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's strategic "Victory Plan" specifically for the United States.
Zelenskyy later clarified that Ukraine is not going to give away its minerals even to strategic partners. We propose to develop them in partnership.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump, in an interview with The New York Post, said that he had spoken by phone with russian dictator vladimir putin to try to agree on an end to the war in Ukraine.
And Zelenskyy believes in the end of the war in 2025.
