HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa declared Syria's transitional President

Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, that led the Syrian opposition's offensive in November 2024, that toppled dictator Bashar al-Assad, has been appointed Syria's transitional President.

The Syrian news agency SANA reported on January 29.

The appointment of al-Sharaa as head of state was announced by Colonel Hassan Abdel Ghani, spokesman for the Directorate of Military Operations.

"We announce the assumption of leadership by Mr. Ahmed al-Sharaa <...> He will act as President of Syria and represent it in international forums," the agency quoted Ghani as saying.

According to Ghani, the transitional government has also abrogated Syria's 2021 constitution. The army and law enforcement agencies, that were subordinate to the former regime, were disbanded.

The Baath Party, to which Bashar al-Assad belonged, as well as the National Progressive Front coalition, were banned.

As a reminder, on November 27, 2024, Syrian opposition groups led by HTS launched a large-scale offensive against government forces in northwestern Syria.

It took the opposition eleven days to take control of most of the country and enter Damascus. This caused the dictator Bashar al-Assad to flee, and he was given refuge by the aggressor country of russia.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 8, 2024, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali declared his readiness to transfer power in the country to the leadership of opposition groups.

In late December, it became known that the new Syrian government had agreed with the leaders of numerous opposition groups that they would unite and become part of the country's new Ministry of Defense.
