Syria's new government announced that opposition groups will be united under leadership of Defense Ministry

The head of the new Syrian government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, announced an agreement with opposition groups to unite into a single structure under the leadership of the Syrian Defense Ministry.

Al Jazeera reported this, citing a statement from the Syrian General Administration on Telegram.

The administration said that al-Sharaa's meeting with the commanders of opposition groups ended with an agreement to dissolve all groups and unite them under the leadership of the country's Defense Ministry.

At the same time, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish group supported by the United States, refused to join this agreement.

The publication recalled that last week, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir said that the ministry would be reorganized with the involvement of former rebel factions and officers who had transferred from the former army.

Al Jazeera correspondent Resul Serdar called this event "the most important" since the fall of the Assad regime.

"The main concern was how these groups that fought against the regime for 13 years of civil war - groups that are well-armed - how they are going to merge and unite," the channel quotes Serdar as saying.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 17, the transitional government of Syria called on russia to reconsider its presence in the country. This concerns two russian army bases in western Syria.
