U.S. President Donald Trump has said he intends to restore relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Kyodo has reported this.
Answering a question in an interview with Fox News whether he would contact the North Korean leader, with whom he met in person three times during his first presidency, Trump said: "I will, yeah."
The U.S. President called Kim Jong Un a "smart guy" and added: "I got along with him. He's not a religious zealot."
It is indicated that during his first presidency, Trump has repeatedly said that he had a good relationship with Kim, although their nuclear talks ultimately failed in 2019, and has also expressed his desire to restore diplomacy with North Korea several times.
In addition, a few hours after taking office on January 20, Trump described North Korea as a "nuclear power" and said that, in his opinion, Kim should be happy to have him back as president.
It is assumed that in an attempt to resume negotiations, Trump may refrain from trying to convince Kim to completely eliminate North Korea's nuclear arsenal.
It is currently unclear whether his words mean a departure from Washington's long-standing position, which does not officially recognize the country as a nuclear power and seeks its complete denuclearization.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Trump wants to discuss reducing nuclear weapons stocks with China and russia. The head of the White House believes that denuclearization can be an important step towards ensuring the security of the planet.
Trump also said that he wants to meet with the leader of the aggressor country, russia, vladimir putin, as soon as possible to ensure an end to the war with Ukraine.
