Lithuania ready to send its army to Ukraine if asked

Lithuania is ready to send its armed forces to Ukraine together with military contingents of other Western countries if asked by allies.

According to LRT, this was stated by Lithuanian Defense Minister Kęstutis Budris on January 15.

"We would discuss with allies and partners what this would look like, and we would discuss with Ukraine what this would look like," Budris said.

He recalled that when French President Emmanuel Macron announced the initiative to expand the military presence in Ukraine after the Paris summit, Lithuania did not reject such an opportunity.

Budris added that Lithuania is a country that provides security in the region. It does this not only through diplomatic means, but also "by other means."

"There will be such a question - I have no doubt that the Lithuanian flag will be present there," the Lithuanian minister emphasized.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, today, January 15, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine supports the idea of deploying military contingents of partners.

He drew attention to the fact that it is necessary to discuss the deployment of troops only after it becomes clear what kind of army Ukraine will have after the end of the war.

Earlier in January, Zelenskyy said that the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine would be "one of the best" tools for forcing russia to make peace.

As a reminder, in December 2024, Reuters wrote that European officials believe that about 100,000 peacekeepers should be sent to Ukraine.
