French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are discussing the possibility of sending a peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine in the event of an agreement between Kyiv and moscow to cease hostilities. Paris and London view such a mission as a security guarantee for Ukraine.
This idea has already been discussed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The British edition of The Telegraph reports that although negotiations are underway, official representatives of the countries refrain from commenting on the details. It is also noted that the idea has not yet received final support in London, as there are questions about the safety of peacekeepers and the potential risks of escalating the conflict.
The Telegraph offers three possible scenarios for the deployment of peacekeepers:
- Freezing the line of combat contact with temporary russian control over the occupied territories.
- Protection of Kyiv by Western troops.
- Creation of an "air shield" on the territory of Poland and training of Ukrainian military personnel in Ukraine.
These scenarios remain at the discussion stage and carry significant uncertainty.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine supports the idea of deploying military contingents of partners.
In December 2024, Reuters wrote that European officials believe that it is necessary to send about 100,000 peacekeepers to Ukraine.
