The European Union sees no reason to abandon the large-scale sanctions that were imposed on the aggressor country of russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The corresponding statement was made by the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas.
Barrons writes about this with reference to the AFP agency.
"We definitely need the current sanctions. This is our lever of pressure, and it would be very strange to give it up," Kallas said.
She added that there are no prerequisites for lifting or easing the sanctions, because russian dictator vladimir putin has not changed his goals regarding Ukraine.
Since the start of the full-scale attack on Ukraine, the European Union countries have introduced 15 packages of various sanctions against russia, affecting almost all sectors of the russian economy and frozen assets worth about EUR 260 billion.
Every six months, the EU countries meet to decide whether to extend anti-russian sanctions or not. The next decision must be unanimously adopted by the end of January.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on January 16, Hungary stated that Budapest was not yet ready to support the extension of sanctions against russia. They added that a decision on this issue should be made only after the arrival of the new US President Donald Trump.
As we recall, in late December 2024, it became known that the European Union began work on the 16th package of restrictive measures against russia.
