Hungary not ready to support extension of sanctions against russia until inauguration of US President Trump

Hungary is not ready to support the extension of European sanctions against the aggressor country russia before the inauguration of Donald Trump.

According to Reuters, Hungarian Minister for European Union Affairs János Bóka stated this on January 16, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

According to Reuters, Budapest believes that a decision on this issue should be made only after the arrival of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in the White House.

"I think it is quite natural that before making a decision to postpone sanctions for another six months, we will ask the future U.S. administration how they see the future of the sanctions regime," the publication quotes the minister as saying.

Speaking to journalists, Bóka added that the sanctions, which are subject to renewal, affect various sectors of the russian economy and the country's frozen assets.

Reuters recalled that the renewal of European sanctions against russia occurs every six months, but this requires a unanimous decision by all EU members.

Since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, European countries have approved 15 packages of anti-russian sanctions, and the bloc is currently working on the 16th package of restrictive measures.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
