The aggressor country of russia intends to annex Belarus within the next ten years in order to further use the economic resources and geographical position to prepare a strike on NATO countries.
According to The Moscow Times, this is stated in a 108-page report by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) entitled "Russia's Quiet Conquest: Belarus".
ISW analysts wrote that russia is now close to the actual annexation of Belarus. If current trends continue, the absorption of the country may take place within the next ten years.
They believe that the annexation of Belarus with its complete loss of any sovereignty is a long-term strategy of moscow. The implementation of this strategy is taking place through channels in the political, economic and military spheres.
At the same time, they assume that russia will be able to annex Belarus even in a scenario where Ukraine, with the support of the West, wins the war. In this case, moscow can use the resources of Belarus to restore the economy and army, in order to further prepare a strike on NATO countries or attack Ukraine again.
The ISW added that Belarus is already under enormous influence from russia, so moscow does not need additional successes to complete the takeover of the country.
The analysts listed the factors that indicate this:
- Russia used Belarus as a springboard for an attack on Ukraine.
- Russia has military bases on the territory of Belarus.
- Russia uses Belarus to fill Europe with migrants from Africa and the Middle East.
- Russia has deployed its nuclear weapons in Belarus.
ISW believes that one should not count on stopping the "quiet" annexation of Belarus, since the importance of this event has taken root in the minds of russian officials over the past few years.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the day before it became known that in the fall of 2024, France conducted training of its special forces for possible deployment in Ukraine in the event of an invasion of the russian army from the territory of Belarus.
We will recall that in December 2024, russian dictator vladimir putin announced that russia would deploy missile systems armed with Oreshnik missiles in Belarus.
We also wrote that earlier military exercises were held in Poland, during which the Polish military simulated repelling an invasion from Belarus.
