Greenland Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede said that the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, doesn't want to be subordinate to either Copenhagen or Washington.
Egede said this on Friday, January 10.
This is reported by European Pravda with reference to the Financial Times.
According to him, the people of Greenland don't want to be part of either Denmark or the US.
"We don't want to be Danes, we don't want to be Americans, we want to be Greenlanders," Egede said.
The Greenland Prime Minister said these words in the presence of the head of the Danish government, Mette Frederiksen. She called the island's desire for independence understandable and legitimate.
At the same time, she emphasized that she intends to preserve Denmark. The kingdom includes Denmark itself, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
As a reminder, in December 2024, US President-elect Donald Trump said that Denmark should transfer Greenland to American control. According to him, the US needs the island for security reasons.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Denmark allocated USD 1.5 billion to strengthen Greenland's defenses after Trump's statement that the island should be transferred to US control.
And on January 8, the US President-elect said that he did not rule out using the army to establish control over Greenland.
Earlier today, January 10, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that she had asked Trump for a meeting amid his statements about Greenland.
