Danish PM wants talks with Trump amid Greenland claims

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she has asked to speak to US President-elect Donald Trump amid his claims to take control of Greenland, not ruling out the possibility of force.

This was reported by Politico.

"We have offered a conversation (with Trump), and I expect it to happen," Frederiksen told reporters on Thursday after meeting with other senior Danish officials about the situation, adding that she does not expect a dialogue to take place before Trump's inauguration on January 20.

According to the Danish Prime Minister, Trump has not yet responded to the call.

On Tuesday, Donald Trump's son made a private visit to Greenland, posting photos on social media with locals dressed in MAGA merch, claiming that "Greenland loves America and Trump."

A senior Greenlandic politician told the publication that the visit was “staged,” warning the U.S. against “invading” the island and repeating its treatment of Alaska’s indigenous people.

Along with that, Trump himself posted a video of his son’s visit, including a selection of videos of Greenlanders wearing MAGA hats, who appear to show support for Trump’s purchase of the island. In the caption to the video, Trump thanked the “incredible people of Greenland” for “treating his son so well,” adding without further elaboration: “We’ll see you again - SOON!”

The Arctic island, with a population of about 60,000, is an autonomous Danish territory.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 23, Trump said that ownership and control of the vast island is an “absolute necessity” for the United States.

Trump also did not rule out the possibility of using military force to establish control over Greenland or the Panama Canal.

After that, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot warned US President-elect Donald Trump against threatening the "sovereign borders" of the European Union.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke said that Greenland could become independent if its inhabitants wanted to, but it was unlikely to become a US state.

Meanwhile, Trump said that Greenland is important to US national security.
