Airlines advised to stop flights to russia due to war against Ukraine

Airlines have been advised to stop flights to airports in the west and southwest of the aggressor country of russia due to its military aggression against Ukraine. The recommendation is likely also related to the recent crash of an Embraer 190 aircraft of the Azerbaijani airline Azerbaijan Airlines.

This is stated in a bulletin published on January 9 by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

"In order to ensure maximum flight safety in the context of russia's ongoing illegal invasion of Ukraine, the new conflict zone bulletin replaces and expands the scope of the recommendations regarding russian airspace," EASA said.

Airlines are advised not to fly west of the 60th meridian of east longitude at all flight levels. These are the airports of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Samara.

The agency noted that currently no airline from the EU countries operates flights to russia. However, a number of carriers from third countries continue to do so, despite the military risks.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on December 25, an Embraer 190 passenger plane of Azerbaijan Airlines crashed in the city of Aktau in western Kazakhstan.

There were 67 people on board: 62 passengers and five crew members. 39 people were killed.

As it became known later, the cause of the plane crash was a missile fired by a russian anti-aircraft missile system in the Grozny area.

In addition, the damaged plane was denied landing at the airports of three russian cities. The crew was advised to fly across the Caspian Sea to Aktau in Kazakhstan.

Azerbaijan Airlines later stated that the cause of the accident was "physical and technical external impact" on the aircraft.
