Orbán calls on EU to review sanctions against russia related to oil and gas

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the European Union should review restrictive measures against the aggressor country of russia. He believes that sanctions are the cause of high energy prices.

Orbán made a corresponding statement on November 15, his words are quoted by the Reuters agency.

According to Orbán, American companies allegedly pay a quarter of what their European counterparts pay for gas and electricity.

He emphasized that this shortcoming cannot be overcome without revising the sanctions policy towards russia.

"The prices of energy carriers must be reduced by any means. This means that the sanctions must be revised," Orbán said.

The agency recalled that since russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine, Orbán has become a critic of EU sanctions against Moscow.

It is noted that while the countries of Western Europe are making efforts to abandon russian energy carriers, Hungary receives 80-85% of its gas from russia. In addition, Budapest purchases about 80% of crude oil from Moscow.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in July 2024, the russian company Lukoil stopped supplying crude oil to Hungary through the Druzhba oil pipeline, which passes through the territory of Ukraine. This happened after Ukraine introduced sanctions against Lukoil.

In August, the Bloomberg agency wrote with reference to its own sources that Hungary continues to receive oil. Instead of Lukoil, which fell under Ukrainian sanctions, the russian company Tatneft began to supply raw materials.

And at the beginning of September, it became known that Hungary agreed on the uninterrupted supply of oil through the Druzhba pipeline.
