The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied media reports that Ukraine is requesting a reduction in aid to refugees in order to return them. The department also denies the ban on consular services for men of draft age.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhii Tykhyi, stated this in a comment to an article by the Spanish newspaper El Pais on X.
"Some statements in this piece are incorrect. 1) The Ukrainian government is not requesting the reduction of assistance; 2) Men of draft age have access to consular services. The goal is to create positive motivation, not hurdles, to encourage voluntary return of our citizens," the comment says.
Recall, the Spanish newspaper El Pais noted that Ukraine seeks to return up to 10 million refugees and migrants who left the country due to the war with russia.
The publication stated that to achieve this goal, the country's leadership is discussing with EU countries measures to put pressure on citizens to encourage them to return - in particular, this is the cancellation of assistance for refugees and a ban on consular services for men of draft age.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that 7.5 million Ukrainians have left for abroad and continue to stay there because of the war. He said this during the government's question hour.
