To return refugees, Ukraine wants EU countries to stop providing them with financial assistance - El Pais

Ukraine seeks to return up to 10 million refugees and migrants who left the country due to the war with russia.

This is reported by El Pais.

The publication notes that to achieve this goal, the country's leadership is discussing with EU countries measures to put pressure on citizens to encourage them to return. In particular, this is the cancellation of aid for refugees and the ban on consular services for men of draft age.

"Kyiv is considering all kinds of solutions. It advocates that EU member states stop helping refugees as a measure of pressure, and men of draft age do not have access to consular services. At the same time, it seeks not to lose touch with those who left through legislative reforms. Last week, parliament approved in the first reading the recognition of dual citizenship (Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian), which was previously prohibited," the publication says.

The reason for such measures: Ukraine needs from 3.1 to 4.5 million workers by 2032 if it wants to achieve annual economic growth of 7%. Meanwhile, in the demographic strategy approved in September, the government admits that from 1.3 to 3.3 million people may not return. In addition, Ukraine currently ranks first in the world in terms of population decline.

Among the reasons why refugees do not want to return, the publication names the following: security, economic instability. People also need a quality education and healthcare system.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, 7.5 million Ukrainians left abroad because of the war.
