European Union Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius has called for allocating EUR 100 billion for defense to prepare for possible russian aggression.
This was reported by Politico.
Kubilius called the plan to increase the EU defense budget to EUR 100 billion "ambitious", since the current seven-year budget of more than EUR 1 trillion provides for only EUR 10 billion for defense. According to him, the key is to provide Ukraine with support to win the war with the aggressor.
"We must be prepared for the possibility of russian aggression. If we fail in Ukraine, then, of course, the likelihood of russian military aggression against EU countries may increase," Kubilius said.
The EU Commissioner also warned about hybrid attacks from russia. Kubilius stressed that the European Union is currently better prepared for military defense than for protecting the "mind of our people."
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in October, residents of European Union countries were recommended to stock up on at least three days of food in case of war or a major emergency.
The Polish capital announced its intention to build bomb shelters due to the threat of attacks from russia.
In March, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia called on NATO to revive the conscript army amid the threat of a full-scale war with russia.
