During the last exchange, the aggressor country of russia returned the body of the mayor of Dniprorudnyi (Zaporizhzhia Region) Yevhen Matveyev, who was tortured in captivity. The russians kidnapped the mayor in March 2022.
This is stated in the message of the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration.
"He lived, worked and was killed by the hands of the occupiers unbroken. For 2 years and 8 months, the mayor of Dniprorudnyi, Yevhen Matveyev, was in russian captivity. During the last exchange, his body was transferred to Ukraine," the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration said.
They also recalled that the community elected Yevhen Matveyev as mayor three times. In this position, he met the full-scale invasion of the russian federation.
"On March 13, 2022, Yevhen Serhiyovych was informed by phone about the detention of the bus with the next shift workers of the Zaporizhzhia Iron and Steel Plant at a checkpoint of the occupiers. The head of the town was not afraid and went to the scene of the incident. The miners were released, and the mayor fell into the clutches of the invaders. His further fate was unknown until recently," the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration reported.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on November 29, 502 bodies of fallen Ukrainian defenders were returned to the territory controlled by Ukraine.
