Ukraine confirms the absence of obstacles to Polish state institutions and private companies conducting search and exhumation works on the territory of Ukraine.
This is announced in the joint statement of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha and Poland Radosław Sikorski dated November 26, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"Ukraine confirms the absence of obstacles to Polish state institutions and private companies conducting search and exhumation works on the territory of Ukraine in cooperation with relevant Ukrainian institutions in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine and declares its readiness to positively consider applications on these issues," the statement says.
It is noted that the parties are determined to resolve the controversial issues of the common past in the name of universal human values and in the Christian spirit. As soon as possible, Ukraine and Poland will launch a joint working group under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland in order to conduct professional work and achieve understanding between the parties.
The parties emphasize the importance of a close strategic partnership between Ukraine and Poland for preserving extraordinary solidarity and mutual understanding between peoples as a solid foundation of relations between the two countries.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in October, Poland stated that it expects real solutions from Ukraine in the search for victims of the Volyn tragedy.
The search work is planned to be carried out in 2025 in the Rivne Region.
The topic of the events in Volyn in 1943-1945, which in Ukrainian historiography is called the Volyn tragedy, and in Polish - the Volyn massacre, remains a stumbling block in bilateral relations.
Poland has made it clear that resolving historical disputes will be one of the mandatory conditions for approving Ukraine's accession to the EU.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk have agreed to meet by the end of this year. Zelenskyy expressed hope for Poland's support in the negotiation process with the EU on the opening of the first cluster of negotiations and the parallel opening of other clusters.
