The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland welcomed Ukraine's intention to find the victims of the Volyn tragedy, but warned that they would not be satisfied with just plans and would wait for decisions.
The spokesman of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paweł Wroński, has stated this.
In Poland, the initiative of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance was called "a step in the right direction" and they are waiting for appropriate decisions.
"In negotiations with Ukrainian partners, [Foreign Affairs] Minister Radosław Sikorski repeatedly emphasized that we expect solutions, not plans," Wroński explained.
He explained that the question of exhuming the victims of the Volyn tragedy should be considered "not as a political dispute, but as a call to the Ukrainian side to make a civilized and Christian gesture of remembrance."
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine is ready to discuss the issue of the Volyn tragedy.
Search works are planned to be carried out in 2025 in the Rivne Region.
On July 24, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that misunderstandings between Ukraine and Poland arise "due to unresolved historical issues."
On September 13, Poland announced its readiness to raise again the topic of exhumation of the victims of the Volyn tragedy during the next visit of its representatives to Ukraine. There they call to "find a solution" - otherwise the country "will take tougher measures."
During the Second World War, various partisan groups operated in the German-occupied territory of Ukraine, including the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the Polish Home Army. They mainly fought in Volyn. Both sides carried out ethnic cleansing, justifying their actions as revenge for repression and murder. According to Polish data, at least 35,000 Poles were killed. According to Ukrainian data, the number of killed Ukrainians is from 9,000 to 10,000.
