The victory of Donald Trump in the presidential election in the United States has prompted the leadership of South Korea to reconsider the possibility of sending weapons to Ukraine, in the war against which North Korea (DPRK) joined.
The Bloomberg agency reported this with reference to an unnamed official familiar with the matter.
According to the interlocutor of the agency, the administration of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol must now take into account the position of the U.S. president-elect in order to decide whether to change its long-standing policy of refusing to send lethal weapons to Ukraine.
Another government official said Seoul is also studying how Trump's approach to the war will affect support for Ukraine in a number of countries.
As Bloomberg reports, the comments of South Korean officials indicate that South Korea will now be less likely to send weapons to Ukraine if its long-time adversary, North Korea, decides to take further action.
According to Kim Jung, a professor of political science at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, “it would be pretty awkward for South Korea" to intervene if the U.S. president-elect wants to distance himself from the conflict in Ukraine.
We will remind, at the end of October, the South Korean agency Yonhap reported with reference to its own sources that the government of South Korea is considering the possibility of sending military advisers to Ukraine and providing the Ukrainian army with its weapons.
We also reported that on October 25, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said that providing Ukraine with South Korean weapons could be a potential step by Seoul against the background of sending North Korean troops to participate in the war.
And the publication Donga previously reported with reference to an official of the South Korean government that Seoul is discussing the possibility of sending South Korean-made artillery shells to Ukraine.
