South Korea is considering sending an intelligence officers group to Ukraine to monitor North Korean troops deployed to support russia. The country's government is also considering the option of providing armed support to Ukraine.
This was reported to the South Korean news agency Yonhap News Agency on Tuesday by a government source.
"There is a possibility that personnel will be sent to Ukraine to monitor the tactics and combat capabilities of the North Korean special forces sent to support russia," the source said.
In particular, it is expected that if the group is deployed, it will include servicemen from intelligence units who will be able to analyze the tactics of conducting hostilities by North Korea or participate in the interrogation of captured North Koreans.
In addition, the government is considering the possibility of providing armed support to Ukraine as part of a possible shift from the policy of refusing direct lethal aid.
"Watching for signs of military cooperation between North Korea and russia, retaliatory measures will be taken in stages. Instead of lethal weapons, priority will be given to defensive weapons, and even if lethal aid is provided, the possibility of its indirect transfer will be considered first," the source said.
It is noted that South Korea has a number of defensive weapons, including the medium-range anti-missile defense system " Cheongung-II".
Asked what russia could give North Korea in exchange for sending troops, defense ministry spokesperson Jeon Ha-kyou said the ministry believed Moscow could provide Pyongyang with financial aid or advanced technology.
It will be recalled that earlier South Korean intelligence published satellite images that recorded the movement of North Korean troops towards the aggressor state of russia. In particular, North Korea has decided to send about 12,000 troops to russia to support its war against Ukraine and has already deployed 1,500 special forces fighters in Vladivostok.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, meanwhile, 18 North Korean soldiers, who escaped from positions in the Kursk Oblast, are currently detained by the russians. They can be sent to assault groups.
Earlier, the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security under the Ministry of Culture and Information published a video in which, according to the description, russian equipment is given to North Korean soldiers.
