NATO troops could enter the territory of Ukraine and take direct part in battles with russian troops, but the Alliance is prevented by the fact that russia has nuclear weapons.
The Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Rob Bauer, stated this during a speech at the Prague Defense Summit.
According to him, this is the main difference between the war in Ukraine and the war in Afghanistan.
"I am absolutely sure that if the Russians did not have nuclear weapons, we would have been in Ukraine kicking them out. We would have but they have nuclear weapons," the official said.
At the same time, Bauer believes that NATO can still take part in the russian-Ukrainian war. But he considers this decision more political than military.
"Afterwards everybody say – but the red line wasn't the red line, so why didn't we give those weapons earlier? But if you are looking at the problem in the future, like the question is there, and what, and you don't necessarily understand the consequences, then it's much more difficult," he said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the United States is currently not ready to send Ukraine an invitation to join the North Atlantic Alliance, said Julianne Smith, the United States Permanent Representative to NATO in the administration of President Joe Biden.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Pete Hegseth as the country's Secretary of Defense. He served in Afghanistan and Iraq, and is currently a Fox News anchor.
