At the moment, the United States is not ready to send Ukraine an invitation to join the North Atlantic Alliance, said Julianne Smith, the United States Permanent Representative to NATO in the administration of President Joe Biden.
Politico reported this on Wednesday, October 23.
The U.S. cannot invite Ukraine to NATO now, despite the fact that this is a key point of the Victory Plan of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the publication noted.
"The alliance has not, to date, reached the point where it is prepared to offer membership or an invitation to Ukraine. Our intent is to keep moving them closer to NATO," Smith said.
According to her, the U.S. will continue to support NATO and provide leadership in the Alliance regardless of the results of the November 5 presidential election.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on October 18, a high-ranking representative of the U.S. President Joe Biden's administration stated that there is currently no consensus among NATO members regarding the invitation of Ukraine to the Alliance.
On October 17, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that one day Ukraine will become the 33rd or 34th member of the Alliance.
We will remind you that on October 16, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly presented the Victory Plan, the first point of which is an invitation to NATO.
