The inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump may lead to a ceasefire with the aggressor country russia. Ukrainian politicians are allegedly discussing this, The Economist reports.
According to the publication, Kyiv politicians are talking about two dates: January 20 and May 25, 2025.
The first date, writes the publication, is considered in Kyiv as the first day of a possible ceasefire with russia and the cancellation of martial law. On this day, the inauguration of Donald Trump will take place in the U.S.
The second date is May 25. It may become the earliest estimated date for the elections.
The Economist writes that the Office of the President of Ukraine denies preparations for the elections. Most of the publication's sources are also skeptical about this.
The publication notes that this is not the first time that the Ukrainian capital is "awash with rumor" about holding a presidential election.
"There are issues of organisation and legitimacy: how can a splintered nation at war hold elections? The country also has yet to endure what many assume will be a difficult winter," The Economist said.
At the same time, the publication writes that some work on possible elections is allegedly already underway. It is claimed that regional election headquarters are allegedly working on lists of candidates.
Representatives of one of the likely opponents of the current president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, told the publication that Ukraine needs elections. According to them, politicians are afraid to make public statements about this, fearing a harsh reaction from the President's Office.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in May 2023, Donald Trump said that he would be able to stop the war in 24 hours if he won the U.S. presidential election.
We will remind, on November 8, the Bloomberg agency wrote that Trump, in a conversation with one of the European leaders, discussed how he should approach negotiations with russian dictator vladimir putin regarding Ukraine.
And the day before, the U.S. Department of State announced that Washington would support Zelenskyy if he wanted to start negotiations with russia.
