Since October 2022, as part of the EUMAM Military Assistance Mission, more than 62,000 Ukrainian servicemen have undergone training in the countries of the European Union, and by the end of 2024, this number will increase to 75,000.
Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said this on his Facebook page, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
He noted that during the meeting with the delegation of the EU Political and Security Committee, he emphasized that supporting Ukraine is a contribution to the security of the entire European continent.
Umerov expressed gratitude for the EU ambassadors' decision to extend the mandate of the EUMAM Mission for another two years. He emphasized the importance of making EUMAM even more effective.
"Stressed the importance of conducting mission exercises here in Ukraine, which will significantly speed up the training of our defenders. He also called on European countries to invest in production directly in Ukraine. We are ready to conclude long-term contracts and develop joint production of drones, long-range weapons and ammunition," the Minister said.
He also noted that Ukraine expects a new tranche of aid from the EU in the amount of EUR 1.9 billion at the expense of frozen russian assets, these funds are needed immediately. Ukraine also hopes that partners will find an opportunity to allocate EUR 6 billion from the European Peace Fund to strengthen the Ukrainian army at the front.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in November 2023, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that partner countries had trained more than 100,000 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in less than two years.
The security agreement signed by Ukraine with the EU on June 27 provides for military aid to Ukraine of EUR 5 billion in 2024, with further annual increases until 2027. Regarding military training and defense reform, the agreement stipulates that the EU will continue to provide training to the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine, in particular through the EU Military Assistance Mission to Ukraine (EUMAM).
In October 2022, the Council of the European Union created a military assistance mission to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) and additionally agreed to allocate EUR 500 million within the framework of the European Peace Fund to further support the military capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
