Zelenskyy and Navalny among favorites to receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize - Reuters

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is one of the most likely candidates for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

This was reported by the Reuters agency with reference to the analysis of bookmakers.

Other candidates with high chances of victory include the Palestinian Authority of the United Nations for Refugees, the International Court of Justice of the United Nations and the head of the United Nations, António Guterres.

"Given the past form, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is able to make a complete surprise in the announcement of October 11, including the refusal to award the prize altogether," the publication notes.

It is interesting that the majority of bookmakers also named russian politician Alexei Navalny, who died in a russian prison in February 2024, among their favorites. However, it is noted that, according to the rules, the prize is not awarded posthumously, therefore, unless the organizers decide to violate their own rules, Navalny will not even be nominated.

As for Zelenskyy, according to bookmakers, his victory may be hindered by the fact that Ukraine continues to be in a state of full-scale war, despite all efforts to achieve peace.

The situation with the Palestinian UN Refugee Agency is also ambiguous, because Israel has officially accused them of the fact that some of the agency's employees participated in the attack by Hamas militants on the south of Israel on October 7, 2023, which provoked the war in Gaza. An internal UN investigation confirmed that nine agency staff members may have been involved in the attack, all of whom were fired.

As previously reported, in 2023, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a women's rights defender from Iran, who was arrested 13 times.
