Ukrainian Legion starts first recruitment of volunteers in Poland - Ministry of Defense

The Ukrainian Legion initiative, which aims to attract Ukrainians abroad to the Defense Forces of Ukraine, has officially started recruiting volunteers in Poland.

The Ministry of Defense has said this in a statement, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

The first recruiting center was opened in Lublin, Poland, on the basis of the Ukrainian consulate.

It is noted that more than one and a half dozen employees of the center - officers of the Armed Forces, seconded from Ukraine - will provide consultations and support in registration.

"The military medical commission (MMC) works on the basis of the center, which includes doctors and medical personnel with all the necessary equipment for conducting examinations and issuing conclusions on fitness for service. After registration, the training of volunteers will take place at the training ground deployed by the Polish side," noted First Deputy Minister of Defense Ivan Havryluk.

According to him, Ukraine provided uniforms and rear support, and Polish partners provided weapons and equipment.

The recruiting process takes place through the submission of applications on the official website of the Ukrainian Legion or through consulates and embassies.

According to the report, during the first days of the opening of the recruiting center in Lublin, 138 applications for interviews were received through the website and another 58 - through consular offices.

After processing them, the staff of the recruiting center contacts the candidates for a preliminary interview, clarification of data and determination of positions.

Candidates with Ukrainian passports are invited to the recruiting center for an interview with the commander, during which the position is determined, documents are checked and a referral for a medical examination is issued.

If the medical examination is successful, the volunteer receives a contract signing date, usually two weeks after the completion of all checks.

"After signing the contract, the volunteers go to the training ground for training, which will last 35 days. In the future, the servicemen may be sent to improve their skills at one of the European NATO bases for a few more months," Havryluk said.

Earlier, the Minister of Defense of Poland Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that the creation of the Ukrainian Legion is under serious question, as only a small number of Ukrainians expressed a desire to join the unit.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the security agreement signed with Poland in July provides for the training of the Ukrainian Legion on the territory of Poland from Ukrainians who are currently abroad.
