Chinese leader Xi Jinping may meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy next month, former deputy foreign minister Oleksandr Chalyi said in Beijing at the opening of the Xiangshan forum dedicated to security and defense issues.

According to Chalyi, Ukraine's diplomacy with Beijing has improved, and now a meeting is possible. He said that Ukraine is waiting for "direct contacts between President Zelenskyy and the leader of the People's Republic of China, Xi."
Cui Hongjian, director of the European Studies Department at the China Institute of International Studies, said on the sidelines of the forum that China is open to joining the upcoming peace summit because it does not want its efforts to "go to waste."
"We are ready to do everything that promotes peace," said Cui, answering a question about the prospect of Xi's meeting with Zelenskyy.
The agency noted that Ukraine is among 90 countries and international organizations represented at the security forum held on September 12-14 in Beijing.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in May China and Brazil offered to hold an alternative peace conference regarding Ukraine.
On July 24, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the settlement of the "conflict in Ukraine" should take place at the negotiating table, but the conditions and time are not yet ripe.
On August 27, the head of the President's Office, Andrii Yermak, said that Chinese leader Xi Jinping should meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to confirm his country's neutrality regarding russia's war in Ukraine.
