The Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States, David Cohen, said that the russian command intends to conduct a counteroffensive in order to return the lost territories of the Kursk Oblast.
Cohen made the corresponding statement at a conference on national security on Wednesday, August 28, his words are quoted by the Reuters agency.
According to him, although Ukraine has not officially announced its intention to annex the part of the Kursk Oblast under its control, the units of the Armed Forces are busy building defensive positions.
He emphasized that this testifies to Kyiv's plans to hold captured russian territories for some time.
"We can be sure that Putin will launch a counteroffensive to try to retake this territory. I think we expect it to be an uphill battle for the Russians," Cohen said.
He added that the Kremlin will have to face not only the realization that the front line is on the territory of russia, but also the backlash in society due to the failure of the defense of its border region.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on August 27, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that since the beginning of the operation in the Kursk Oblast, the Ukrainian military has taken control of 100 settlements.
And President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated at his press conference that he considers the operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk Oblast a success, despite the difficult situation in the Donetsk Region.
Today the U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed that Ukraine's operation in the Kursk Oblast is allegedly pushing the world towards a new world war.
