Farmers suffer millions of losses due to unreasonable downtime of ships in Odesa ports - UGA

The Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) is concerned about the reports of grain market participants about the unreasonable delay of grain-loaded ships for export in the ports of Great Odesa.

This is stated in the UGA message, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

It is noted that such a delay of ships in ports causes enormous damage to Ukrainian farmers and the state budget.

"Each day of delays to grain-laden vessels at ports results in losses of between USD 1 and USD 1.5 per ton of production per day. If you take for example the ship Handysize with a tonnage of 50,000 tons, the losses for the exporter due to the delay of the ship in the port cost USD 50,000-75,000 a day, which the exporter is forced to pay to the shipowner. In addition, the cost of insuring such ships through staying in Ukrainian ports is increasing," the statement said.

It is noted that such ship delays at ports are in no way related to weather conditions or navigation.

The UGA calls on the government to intervene in the situation caused by officials at the regional level, to stop arbitrary delay of ships and to unlock grain exports as quickly as possible.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on September 21, the Resilient Africa bulk carrier arrived in the Turkish Bosphorus Strait.

This is the first grain ship from Ukraine, which passed through the Black Sea along a temporary corridor.
