On the night of July 23, the Russian invaders carried out a massive attack on the Odesa Region, the Transfiguration Cathedral was destroyed. A security guard was hospitalized.
The Odessa Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church reported this and published a video with the consequences of the blow.
"The Russian terrorist troops bombed the Transfiguration Cathedral of Odesa - the spiritual shrine of our city," the message said.
Thus, a direct hit by a Russian rocket hit the central altar, as a result of which the cathedral building was partially destroyed, the ceiling of the three lower floors, the interior decoration and icons were significantly damaged. In addition, the office premises of the lower part of the cathedral were completely destroyed.
It is indicated that a fire immediately began, which the firefighters managed to quickly localize and extinguish.
It is reported that a security guard of the cathedral was injured as a result of an enemy strike, he was treated and hospitalized.
Currently, rescue work is ongoing by employees of the State Emergency Service, utilities are working.
"The Odesa Diocese of the UOC once again condemns the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, this terrorist act against the main shrine and spiritual heart of the city of Odesa - the Transfiguration Cathedral, around which peaceful people live, and the cathedral itself in no way is connected with military facilities," the message said.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on the night of July 23, the Russian occupiers carried out another massive attack on the Odesa Region - they struck with 5 types of missiles, in particular, ballistic ones. The destruction of port infrastructure, residential buildings and cars has been recorded, the Transfiguration Cathedral has been mutilated, there are breaks in the power grids, several sinkholes have been formed in the city. Police reported 1 killed and 22 injured.
