The Verkhovna Rada changed the dates of public holidays. Now the following holidays have been established: the Day of Ukrainian Statehood on July 15 instead of July 28, the Day of Defenders - October 1 instead of October 14, Christmas - December 25 instead of January 7. Yaroslav Zhelezniak, Member of Parliament from the Holos faction, wrote about this in the Telegram channel, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"The Verkhovna Rada changed the dates of public holidays: in general, in total for No. 9431 – 241. The purpose of the bill is to "renounce Russian heritage": December 25 - Christmas (instead of January 7), July 15 - Ukrainian Statehood Day (instead of July 28), when memory of the outstanding state-builder, the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr the Great of Kyiv, is commemorated, October 1 - the Day of Defenders of Ukraine (instead of October 14), connected with the Ukrainian military traditions of commemorating the Day of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God," he said.
He noted that this law will be signed after July 28, so the Day of Ukrainian Statehood will be July 28 this month.
The Day of Ukrainian Statehood is celebrated on the church holiday of St. Volodymyr's Day, and the Day of Defenders of Ukraine is celebrated on Intercession. Since the Orthodox Church of Ukraine switched to a different calendar, the dates of these church holidays also changed.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on June 28, Zelenskyy proposed to celebrate and establish the Day of Ukrainian Statehood on July 15 instead of July 28, the Day of Defenders on October 1 instead of October 14, and Christmas on December 25 instead of January 7.
At the same time, he proposed to cancel the holiday on January 7.
In May, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine officially switched to the celebration of Christmas according to the New Julian calendar, namely on December 25, in addition, OCU believers will now celebrate Epiphany (Baptism of the Lord) on January 6, and the Intercession of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God on October 1.
