To intercept a drone that violated Romanian airspace, two Romanian F-16 fighter jets and two Italian Eurofighter jets were scrambled. It was reported by NATO Air Command on Friday, July 24.
On the morning of July 24, 2026, two Romanian F-16s from Fetești Air Base and two Italian Eurofighters from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, under NATO command, took off to identify an unknown unmanned aerial vehicle flying near Romanian airspace.
“The drone was promptly identified, and after crossing into Romanian airspace, the NATO assets were cleared to engage. Quickly after, the threat was shot down in Romanian airspace. This multinational combined effort underlines how NATO is ready and able to react to any potential air threats, 24/7, to safeguard our territory and protect our people,” the statement said.

An investigation is currently underway. NATO is in close contact with Romanian authorities.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 29, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker condemned the incursion of a russian drone into Romanian territory, which subsequently struck a high-rise building in Galați.
As a reminder, Romanian authorities confirmed that a russian Geran-2 drone crashed into a residential building in Galați. The drone exploded upon impact, injuring two people.
