Operators from the Ukrainian National Guard’s “Omega” Special Operations Center destroyed a russian Su-24M frontline bomber in the occupied Crimea. The aircraft was struck at the Saky airfield.
Oleksandr Pivnenko, the commander of the Ukrainian National Guard, announced this on Thursday, July 16.
According to him, after identifying the target, National Guard personnel carried out thorough planning of the operation. The strike against the russian bomber was carried out just as the aircraft was preparing for a combat sortie to launch another round of strikes on Ukrainian territory.
The bomber was struck by two drones. The first hit the nose of the aircraft, and the second struck the area of the fuel tanks.
Pivnenko also published a video showing footage of the russian bomber being struck.
The Su-24 is a Soviet front-line bomber designed to carry out missile and bomb strikes under any weather conditions. It made its maiden flight in January 1970. From 1971 to 1993, approximately 1,400 units were produced.
According to information from open sources, as of 2024, the russian federation’s armed forces had approximately 160 Su-24 aircraft of various modifications in service.
According to the Oryx project, since the start of the full-scale invasion, the occupiers have lost (either destroyed or damaged) at least 15 Su-24 aircraft.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 3, the Security Service of Ukraine carried out strikes on the Saky and Hvardiiske airfields in the occupied Crimea. Seven hangars housing Su-24, Su-30, and Su-30SM aircraft were hit.
Two days earlier, on July 1, the SSU also used drones to strike the Saky airfield, hitting two hangars containing Su-30 and Su-30SM aircraft.
