Russian dictator vladimir putin has shown a categorical unwillingness to engage in diplomatic contact and has rejected the latest peace proposals from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which had previously received official support from Washington. US Under Secretary of State Jeremy P. Lewin has stated this during the YES Dinner Discussion on the eve of the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2026), according to Ukrinform.
The American diplomat emphasized that the United States has taken on the role of a key mediator between the warring parties, as no other country is currently capable of effectively fulfilling this function.
“We’ve seen that Putin still isn’t willing to sit down at the negotiating table. You mentioned some of Zelenskyy’s recent proposals, which we welcome, but Putin has rejected them. And so President Trump has put himself in a difficult position because he is committed to achieving true peace for the people of Ukraine, for the region, and for Europe as a whole,” Lewin noted.
According to the State Department official, the kremlin leader’s uncompromising stance directly affects the US administration’s plans and significantly complicates efforts to bring the war to a swift conclusion. The politician added that the only acceptable and best outcome for Ukraine is the achievement of a long-lasting, stable, and just peace; however, the kremlin continues to deliberately block any steps in this direction.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on March 9, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US, and the aggressor country, russia, were being postponed due to the situation surrounding Iran, at the suggestion of the American side.
Subsequently, putin stated that russia is ready for negotiations with Ukraine based on the Istanbul agreements.
