The US Senate approved a resolution that limits President Donald Trump's ability to independently make decisions on the use of American troops in the conflict with Iran. The document was supported by 50 senators, while 48 opposed it, CNN reports.

The initiative for the vote was initiated by Democrats, who in recent weeks have tried to convince some Republicans to support the document. Such an initiative caused discontent in the White House.

The resolution stipulates that the President cannot continue or initiate military action against Iran without the approval of Congress. At the same time, the document has the status of an agreed resolution, therefore it does not require the signature of the head of state and is not formally a law. Despite this, Democrats believe that it is binding.

The Trump administration downplayed the significance of the vote. They stated that the result was made possible due to the absence of several Republican senators, and also emphasized that there are currently no active hostilities from which it would be necessary to withdraw American troops.

In turn, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, who is one of the authors of the initiative, emphasized that Congress must clearly define its role in matters of war and peace. According to him, even despite negotiations and a ceasefire, a possible resumption of the conflict with Iran should not occur without the approval of legislators.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on June 15, US President Donald Trump said that Washington and Tehran had agreed on a ceasefire and the signing of a framework agreement.
