The US Department of the Treasury has not announced an extension of the exemption from sanctions on russian oil, which was initially granted for 30 days in March of this year and subsequently extended in April and May. It was reported by Reuters.

Earlier, yesterday, on June 17, US President Donald Trump did not give a clear answer to journalists’ questions regarding the reinstatement of sanctions against russia.

“We are looking at that. We're seeing how far the price of oil comes down, it's, it's really tumbling,” Trump said at the G7 summit in France.

The day before, on June 16, the US leader hinted that the US might allow the sanctions to be reinstated by lifting the exemption.

“Soon we'll be able to do that, because the oil is now flowing,” Trump said.

Reuters notes that in 2025, the Trump administration imposed sanctions against the russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil in order to pressure moscow to end the war in Ukraine.

After Israel and the US launched a war against Iran in late February, the Strait of Hormuz was blocked. The Persian Gulf countries lost the ability to export oil. Against this backdrop, Washington granted a sanctions exemption for russian oil transported by sea. The exemption was extended twice, and it expired overnight on June 17.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated yesterday that Trump has changed his tone regarding Ukraine and the tightening of sanctions against russia.

As a reminder, on Tuesday, June 16, on the sidelines of the G7 summit, Trump held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Afterward, he stated that russia must conclude a peace agreement.
