Poland will not recognize any agreements on Ukraine without its participation - Tusk

Main points
  • Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated the need for Poland to participate in international agreements on Ukraine.
  • Tusk has already discussed the results of the London summit with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
  • The Polish Prime Minister urged not to consider the situation as a weakening of the anti-russian coalition and warned against hasty dialogue with the Kremlin.

Warsaw refuses to recognize any international agreements on the future of Ukraine if they are adopted without the involvement of the Polish side. This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk after the meeting of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with the leaders of Great Britain, Germany and France in the E3 format in London.

The Polish Prime Minister reported that he had already discussed the results of the London summit with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. During the conversation, Tusk directly pointed out to Berlin that Poland is an indispensable link and a key security hub, without which a real settlement of the situation in Ukraine is impossible.

"I said that from Poland's point of view, no agreements in which Poland does not participate will be respected by us, that is, will not be binding on us," Tusk warned.

In addition to Poland, Rome also expressed dissatisfaction with the London format of the "troika". According to Donald Tusk, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is also not delighted with the existence of such a format. In order to resolve this issue, in the coming days they plan to organize a meeting in an expanded format of the "five" with the participation of representatives of Poland and Italy.

Commenting on communication problems within Europe, Tusk noted that when the "troika" meets, Poland and Italy are dissatisfied, and in the format of the "five" Spain expresses indignation. At the same time, it is practically impossible to make a quick decision in the format of all 27 EU countries due to the requirement of unanimity. Despite these disputes, the Polish Prime Minister urged not to consider the situation as a weakening of the anti-russian coalition and warned against hasty dialogue with the Kremlin.

"It should be quite clear that no one in Europe will act as an arbitrator between russia and Ukraine. In this war, we are on the side of Ukraine. Ukraine cannot lose this war, and russia cannot win it," Tusk concluded.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, meanwhile, the spokesman for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that European leaders are ready to take a leading role in negotiations to end russia's war against Ukraine.

As we will recall, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously said that peace talks between russia and Ukraine have so far "not been fruitful," and the US is not interested in endless meetings without progress. At the same time, the country is ready to continue participating in the negotiations if they are productive.
