The US House of Representatives has passed the Ukraine Support Act, which provides for financial aid to Ukraine and imposes new sanctions against russia. The bill was supported by 226 members of Congress, with 195 voting against it, according to Reuters.
The vote revealed a split among Republicans: 18 Republican representatives, along with one independent lawmaker, supported the Democrats’ initiative in defiance of Donald Trump’s general policy.
The bill provides for over USD 1 billion in direct aid to Ukraine, up to USD 8 billion in loans, as well as funds for post-war reconstruction. In addition, the bill imposes export controls and sanctions against russia’s oil, mining, and financial sectors, as well as against russian officials.
The bill’s future remains uncertain, as it must be approved by the Senate, where Republican leadership is currently blocking a vote while awaiting Donald Trump’s position. If the Senate passes the bill, the US president may veto it.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the US has scaled back support for investigations into russian war crimes: what this means for Ukraine.
Rubio also announced breaking news regarding the USD 400 million in aid for Ukraine that the Pentagon has withheld.
