Ukraine and Latvia are strengthening their cooperation in the energy, defense, and humanitarian sectors. Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko has announced this following her visit to Riga and meetings with President Edgars Rinkēvičs and Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs.
One of the main outcomes of the talks was a decision to supply energy equipment for Ukrainian thermal power plants and combined heat and power plants. The equipment will arrive in the near future, which will help prepare the power grid for the upcoming heating season. Latvia also confirmed its intention to allocate 0.25% of its GDP annually to support Ukraine.
In the security sphere, the parties focused on technology and air defense. As the Prime Minister noted, during the meetings they “discussed preparations for signing the bilateral Drone Deal agreement, support for Ukrainian defense innovations, and the exchange of experience in the fields of electronic warfare and air defense.”
Special attention was given to the return of forcibly displaced citizens. Yuliia Svyrydenko emphasized that Latvia is actively participating in the international coalition “Bring Kids Back Ukraine.”
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, DTEK announced that russia’s nighttime attack on February 3 was the largest strike on the Ukrainian power grid since the beginning of the year.
Zelenskyy also stated that russia, the aggressor country, had deliberately targeted energy facilities during the winter.
